This is a little portrait study I made while living in New Zealand. To me, one of the most fascinating things about portraiture is that it requires the intersecting of two (or more) lives at a particular moment in time. Some of these people I had never met before and will never see again. The idea was simple: I directed each person to cover part of their face with their hands. I left the actual gestures entirely up to them. I tend to think in terms of visual allegory, which is probably why I gravitate to working with objects. But I’ve recently been inspired to make some portraits again, so I’m warming back up to the idea. If you’d be interested in sitting for me, let’s talk.
